Learn about 175 miles of trails that intersect Baxter State Park with its 46 mountain peaks and ridges. The state park land was donated by former Maine Gov. Percival P. Baxter. He, in 1930, gave Maine nearly 6,000 acres, including the highest mountain - Katahdin- now named in Baxter’s honor. He later gave over 7,000 more acres to the Baxter state park. The South Turner Trail offers a panorama of Katahdin. From that trail you can chose one of four trails to approach the mountain.
