Near the bottom of the state of Minnesota flows the Root River through soaring limestone bluffs in a valley abundant with wildlife. The Root River trail is mainly constructed on an abandoned railroad bed making most of it level and well chair accessible. In 1999 this 42 mile trail was covered with asphalt. The trail passes through some picturesque rural communities with sites of interest to hikers including campgrounds, museums, etc. Links on this page to maps, rules, contacts and finding other trails in Minnesota are easy to use. The Harmony-Preston Valley segment of the Root River State Trail. It is a beautiful 18 mile trail that connects the towns of Harmony and Preston with the main Root River trail. The northern part of the trail passes through woods and pastures as it follows Watson Creek and the south branch of the Root river and Camp creek. The southern section of the trail between County 16 and Harmony climbs out of the river valley going up and down over little hills and crosses into Harmony.
