Hiking in Rhode Island can be varied with the flat, gently rolling farmlands in the south and eastern areas and the abrupt uphill dense woodlands of the north and western areas. Some islands and the coastal beaches provide another different type of hiking. This site gives brief descriptions of some major and minor hiking trails. For example, the North-South Trail runs 72 miles through rural western Rhode Island. It passes eight towns and seven state owned forested management areas. Some segments of it are restricted to only hikers. For a shorter hike - Newport’s Cliff Walk is mentioned, which begins at Memorial Boulevard. This picturesque walk overlooking the ocean is only three miles or so long. On this hike you can view many famous Newport summer mansions nearby. It was designated a National Recreation Trail in 1975. Find more descriptions and links on this site to help you plan your journey in New Jersey. The History link http://www.visitrhodeisland.com/history/famous.html tells of the early settlement by Roger Williams seeking religious freedom.
