Middleton Place

The incredibly beautiful bird’s eye view of Middleton Place, a national historic landmark, will make you hurry to take a hike back in history as you walk through the Middleton estate-a carefully preserved 18th century plantation. Sixty five acres of America’s earliest landscaped terraces, ornamental ponds and garden areas laid out with precise symmetric artistic shapes have welcomed visitors for two and a half centuries. Be sure and visit the estate’s stable yards to see the farm animals cared for as they were then. And see in that area the interpretive guides demonstrate blacksmith skills, weaving, carpentry, pottery and other skills that were required to keep the plantation functioning. Then walk to the House Museum that overlooks the Ashley river and contains the effects of the Middleton owners from the 1740s-1880’s. Guided tours of the house built in 1755 (as a guest house) introduce you to one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence and his Middleton family. The estate was a rice plantation and is located in an area of great natural beauty. Visitors are invited to explore a nature trail on the plantation on foot or by horseback. Guided tours led by a naturalist are available daily. A large group of volunteers - members of the Middleton Place foundation – are available to help visitors on the plantation year round.
